Last Thursday, my friend Rochelle called to say she wanted to get outta town for Labor Day weekend. My head was immediately filled with thoughts about the price of gas and the sucky holiday weekend traffic on Texas highways. But we are resourceful girls and came up with a plan that would be both budget-conscious and road-rage free.
We left Sunday morning and drove 2-1/2 hours to the tiny town of Dublin, Texas. Dublin is home to the original Dr. Pepper bottling plant (Dr. Pepper was invented in Waco but was only available as a fountain drink until 1891 when the Dublin plant opened). Dublin is famous amongst Texans because they are the only Dr. Pepper plant to still use Imperial cane sugar -- no corn syrup. We toured the Dublin plant, which still operates today. Did you know that a bottle of Dr. Pepper has a shelf life of 100 years?

We spent Sunday night in Stephenville and drove to Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose on Monday morning. Fossil Rim is a "drive-through zoo" where the animals come to you. The highlight of the trip was when I got to feed a giraffe! He had furry lips and left a trail of giraffe slobber on my car (yuck). We also had zebras and lots of hooved stock come up to the car and some were even brave enough to stick their head in the window. Rochelle and I made lots of new friends!
